About the Academy
St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy provides a faith-led education for 11 to 18 year olds serving the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen and parts of Pennine Lancashire. We seek to provide an excellent education based upon a strong Christian foundation, as we develop all who work, learn and serve in our community. We benefit from purpose-built accommodation with excellent facilities. All in all, it is a wonderful place to work and learn. Visitors to St Wilfrid’s comment on the calm and purposeful environment, the friendly nature of our students and the welcoming nature of our staff.
We have a reputation for high academic standards. As a comprehensive school, we pride ourselves on providing teaching and learning which engages all students. The recent SIAMS inspector stated:
“Almost everyone describes the academy as being ‘one big family’ where all care for and help one another. This is understood to be the outworking of Christian values and teachings which underpin excellent behaviour and relationships. Students recognise in teachers a commitment to serve which for many is an aspect of their Christian faith. This prompts them to strive to provide the best and most supportive opportunities for all students. The result is exemplary academic and pastoral support which enables students to make good progress, attain excellent results and develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally (SMSC 2016).”
As an Academy, we seek to embrace new methodologies whilst maintaining a balance with traditional practice to bring about excellent examination success. The fact that all students have access to a 1:1 device, is an example of our commitment to use modern technology to maximise learning. Recent development of the site has enhanced the resources available to staff and students, which includes an immersive classroom space and an iMac suite.
Our Mission Statement
The below statement was written by the foundation governors and summarises our pursuit, as we promote high standards and develop our understanding that the Christian faith is the worship and service of One God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
‘St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy sees education as an integral part of the mission of the Church to proclaim God as Creator, Christ as Redeemer and the Holy Spirit as Inspirer of all that is good in human living. The main purpose of the Academy is to provide an excellent education, both academic and social, in a Christian context, to enable its students to grow up to take their full part as citizens of this world and the next.’
In the 2016/17 academic year, St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy celebrated 50 years of providing excellent education in the diocese of Blackburn with Darwen.
Formerly St Wilfrid’s Church of England High School, the Academy is named after Saint Wilfrid, a former Archbishop of Canterbury. Originally located over two sites on Duckworth Street & Byrom Street, a new combined campus on Duckworth Street began development in December 2001, and was completed in January 2004.
The Academy was once a voluntary-aided school, administered by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council. In July 2011, St Wilfrid’s Church of England High School achieved academy status, and was renamed St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy. The Academy is now independent of local authority control, coordinating with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council for admissions only.
St Wilfrid’s is affiliated to the Woodard Corporation which is a family of Anglican Schools from all over the country.
Woodard Schools commit themselves to the importance of the Eucharist and Chaplaincy to the worship and community life of the Academy.
